Clinical Insights

Echocardiography remains the cornerstone of cardiovascular assessment, providing rapid, non-invasive evaluation of cardiac structure, function, and hemodynamics. Advances in strain imaging, contrast, and stress echocardiography have significantly improved early detection of subclinical dysfunction and risk stratification across diverse conditions.
Timely access to high-quality interpretation, standardized protocols, and expedited reporting are essential to optimizing clinical decision-making and patient outcomes
Case Insights
When performing an echocardiogram on a first-time patient, one of our technologists identified that the images were technically difficult to interpret. Rather than proceeding with limited information, the tech decided to use contrast to improve image quality. In doing so, they identified and promptly flagged a possible left ventricular clot on the preliminary report to the physician.
As a result, the physician reported the suspected clot, and the patient was urgently referred to the emergency department, where the clot was confirmed. The patient subsequently underwent cardiac catheterization and PCI.

Referral Tip of the Month
When referring a patient for an echocardiogram, please clearly state the specific clinical question you want answered (e.g., “rule out heart failure,” “assess for valvular disease,” or “evaluate possible thrombus”).
A well-defined indication allows the technologist and interpreting physician to tailor the study appropriately. This will ensure the right images, use of contrast (if necessary), and a more accurate, actionable report. Vague referrals can lead to incomplete assessments, delays, or the need for repeat imaging.
